Tubal ligation is a surgical procedure that sterilizes a woman by closing the fallopian tubes. It is a common procedure used to prevent pregnancy. Tubal ligations are often performed as a result of divorce or the end of a relationship.
What is an Unforeseen Ectopic Pregnancy?
An unforeseen ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy that occurs outside of the uterus, most commonly in the fallopian tubes. This can happen after a woman has had a tubal ligation, which is surgery to remove her ovaries and uterus. Although uncommon, this type of pregnancy can occur in up to 10% of women who have had a tubal ligation. In most cases, the ectopic pregnancy will eventually miscarry
What Causes An Unforeseen Ectopic Pregnancy?
There are a few different things that can cause an unforeseen ectopic pregnancy. The most common is when the woman’s fallopian tube becomes blocked, either from scar tissue or from an infection. This can often happen after a tubal ligation, as the surgery cuts off the woman’s connection to her ovaries. Other causes of an ectopic pregnancy include problems with the woman’s uterus, such as fibroids or cancer, and problems with the man’s sperm, such as genetic abnormalities or low sperm counts.
How is it Diagnosed?
If you have had a tubal ligation, your doctor may not be able to tell that you are pregnant right away. You may need to take a pregnancy test or have an ultrasound done. If you are pregnant, your doctor will likely perform an abortion.
How is it Treated?
If you have had a tubal ligation, there is a small chance that you will become pregnant in an ectopic (outside the uterus) location. This can happen in either the fallopian tube or the ovary. If you are pregnant and your doctor suspects that you have had a tubal ligation, they will perform an ultrasound to determine where the baby is located. If it is in the fallopian tube, they may recommend surgery to remove the baby. If it is in the ovary, they may recommend using medications to prevent pregnancy or fertility treatments such as IVF.
Tubal ligations are often performed as a result of divorce or the end of a relationship. If you experience any symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy, please contact your doctor immediately.
